Chemical principle
HISOL D is Alkali Swellable Associative Thickener. Also, it is referred to Hydrophobically modified Alkali Soluble Emulsion (HASE). The main ingredient of HISOL D is acrylic copolymer emulsion which has low viscosity and is very stable emulsions. HISOL D is dispersed easily in paint and is easy for handling when manufacturing of the water base paints. The modeling of thickening and association principle of HISOL D is from Fig 1 to Fig 4. As it is showed at Fig 1, the chemical structure of HISOL D consists of acrylic ester polymer chain(Main Backbone) which has lots of carboxyl acid radical and the expanded branch from this, Hydrophobe. This hydrophobe has a hydrophobic chemical property as a hydrocarbon chain.
Fig 2 is the model that polymer backbone at the state of emulsion of HISOL D forms spherical micell. Naturally, this micell is dispersed in the water by surfactant stably. When carboxyl radical of polymer backbone is neutralized with alkali like ammonia, amine, caustic soda, potassium hydroxide, it makes hydrophilic onium salt by neutralizing like Fig 2. Generally, non-volatile permanent base like caustic soda or potassium hydroxide deteriorates the water sensibility of the last paint film. So, volatile base like ammonia or amine is used. As it is showed at Fig 3, after neutralization, polymer backbone has solubility in water as changing over hydrophilic chain and hydrophobe chain has a tendency to separate from hydrophilic backbone chain mutually because of the hydrophobic chemical property.
It is described the thickening principle of HISOL D of the emulsion paint in Fig 4. The blue micell is polymer and pigment colloid particles. The successive phase outside of the colloid particle is water phase, and the thickening effect of water phase is happened because backbone polymer of thickener which is dissolved in water has high molecular weight. In addition to this, the thickening effect is added by the association of hydrophobe which extended to the branch. In general, thickener of cellulose type like HEC and water-soluble thickener like ASE have thixotropic property and show the high shear thinning effect by the volume restriction flocculation among colloidal particles in water base paint. But as Fig 4, the thickened paint by the association mechanism solves this problems.
